WASHINGTON—In a partial victory for the former president, the Supreme Court ruled this week that Donald Trump has immunity for any crime committed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. during his time in the White House. “Whether it be bribery, fraud, assassination, or a coup, the president is entitled to immunity for all offenses committed during working hours Monday through Friday,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his majority opinion, emphasizing that the president of the United States was never above the law, with the exception of any crimes he might choose to commit during the 40-hour workweek in addition to paid time off. “If it’s 8:45 a.m, he can still be potentially liable for any crime he commits from his phone while lying in bed. However, the same criminal offense at 9:05 a.m. will be considered an official act. If for any reason the president would like to commit crimes after 5 p.m., he can still do so as long as he clocks in his overtime.” At press time, the Biden administration had slammed the ruling for creating a legal gray area around office holiday parties.
