CHICAGO—In what many described as the ghostly remnants of an internet that died long ago, a tattered banner ad was reportedly all that remained Thursday hanging over long-abandoned website MovieFacts.com. “It’s just so sad, in its heyday, this website used to be a bustling e-commerce hub that people would visit from all around the web,” said former user Cathy Westin as she cautiously navigated her way through a dark, cavernous array of broken links, missing images, and perpetually glitching autoplaying ads. “I spent so much time here back in college, but seeing how desolate the comments section looks, I think I might be the first person to even click on this website in over a decade. Frankly, I’m not even sure if it’s safe to be here. I feel like I’m going to get a virus.” At press time, a panicking Westin quickly closed out of the website and vowed never to return after stumbling upon several grotesque, mutilated pieces of content that had clearly been generated by AI.
